Welcome to the home page of the Geelong Gliding Club

Geelong Gliding ClubWelcome to the home page of the Geelong Gliding Club Inc.. Established in Victoria, in 1929, Geelong Gliding Club was the first gliding club in Australia. The club was formed as a voluntary non-profit organisation to make available the facilities for, and train interested members of the general public in, the sport of gliding.

Since that time it has operated at a number of sites culminating in the establishment of the soaring centre located at the Bacchus Marsh Airfield , currently shared with two other clubs. This sites offers a variety of soaring conditions including thermal, ridge and wave lift, while remaining within easy reach of Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat. As well the club operates camps for it’s members for extended periods at various sites around Victoria. The combined club operation at Bacchus Marsh is the largest in Australia with a total of eighteen club gliders and five tugs .

The club owns and operates it's own fleet of training and modern fibreglass dual and single seat gliders. Launching is provided by the club’s tugs, winch or by auto tow. The club has a number of large hangars available for it’s aircraft ensuring ready availability of aircraft for the use of it’s members. Bunkhouse accommodation and catering facilities are also located on site for the use of all the resident club’s members.

You will find us operating on all weekends, public holidays and most Fridays, weather permitting. Visitors are always welcome.

Horsham Week 2012 Update
Written by Alf McMillan
Sunday, 05 February 2012

The Competition at Horsham Week 2012 got off to a great start on Saturday 4 Feb, with what became a boomer day to 11,000+ft.

A 3 hour Assigned Area Task (AAT) was set for Beulah (40km) and St Arnaud (30km) for all classes.

The tasks flown by Geelong pilots were varied and can be seen on OLC .

Rolf Buelter, (FQF), Jeff Farrow & John Ashford (GWQ), Jarek Mosiejewski & Greg Footit (GHE), Alan Dean (UKA), John Buchanan (GOD) all completed the task - and most of them received a decent score (see Soaring Spot !

Alf McMillan stayed on terra firma with a job to repair the DG300 (GDH) tail wheel inner tube. Sunday 5 Feb was blown out and overcast.

We're hoping for a better day for Monday 6 Feb. Watch this space.

Annual General Meeting 2010
Written by Kevin McGowan
Sunday, 14 November 2010

AGM 2010 A slightly smaller number of members than normal attended the club AGM last night and enjoyed an excellent BBQ dinner after catered once more by the "GGC Masterchef" with several other members helping.

All the normal business was done including the forming on the next committee with a good mix of "new and old blood" to cary the club forward.

There were a couple of vacancies going into the meeting but these were filled by nomination from the floor.

The new committee is:

  • President John Ashford,
  • Vice President Alf McMillan,
  • Treasurer John Buchanan,
  • Secretary Kevin McGowan,
  • Committee Mike Durrant, Dave Fynmore, Alexis Fechner, Lucas James and Alvin Peterson.

The following trophies were presented:

  • The Percy Pratt trophy for the most meritorious flight in a club glider, Rolf Buelter for a flight of 750Km in the LS4.
  • The Tom Thompson trophy for the most improved pilot to Justin Ramsay.
  • The Presidents trophy, this is at the Presidents discretion usually for someone who has given "above and beyond" Spiro Mallia for his on going commitment to the Treasurers position.
  • The Best and Fairest pilot based on the On Line Comp and contribution to the club, Rolf Buelter.

A new class of membership has been created called Family Membership which discounts membership cost for multiple members of one family.
